As the 20th century began, University of California benefactress Jane K. Sather had a vision — a bell tower that would serve as a centerpiece for Berkeley’s growing campus. In 1911, she cemented that vision with a large gift and a request that work proceed on Sather Tower. It was completed in 1915.
The Campanile, as it is commonly called, celebrated its centennial this past year, culminating with a site-specific performance by vertical dance pioneers Bandaloop. More than a beautiful monument, the Campanile is a trusty landmark, music box, guardian, and familiar friend. Most of all, it is a symbol of Berkeley’s enduring contributions to the world.
