Gateway groundbreaking brings new opportunity for computing, data science
The Gateway’s name is meant to both welcome diverse perspectives and areas of expertise and reference the building’s location at the north edge of the Berkeley campus.
The Gateway will be home to UC Berkeley’s first new college in 50 years: the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS). This transformational new entity reimagines academic collaboration and co-creation to tackle the technical, scientific, social, and human dimensions of the most urgent challenges. CDSS leads the way in building platforms to accelerate scalable solutions in biomedicine and human health, climate and sustainability, and human welfare and social justice.
For the first half of her undergraduate life, Sunny Chen ’22 focused on economics, anticipating that she would pursue a career in something like consulting or finance. It wasn’t until she had taken several classes in data science that she realized it had stolen her heart. “It’s really applicable and allows me to see a lot of things through the lens of numbers and trends,” she says. “It also involves a lot of background discussion, like how data is collected or how it can be biased. It’s just a really holistic review of what I’m seeing.”
